OP We have a chain of sandwich shops here in the UK with a rather better image than most. Their paper napkins at the moment have this written on them (my asterisks – I don’t want to make a commercial):
“The French have a special word for it…’compote’. Whatever, we put loads of it in our ********. One thing it isn’t is jam. Jam contains more sugar, less bits and is completely the wrong texture and taste for a *******. The secret to Helen Riley’s old-fashioned compote is lots of patience and a steam jacketed vessel big enough to simmer a hippo in.”

Unfortunately Mc Donald’s have just bought a 33% stake – who knows what their future holds now.
