OP NEWSWEEK for April 29 p.61 has an article about preschool kids benefitting from instruction in words and sounds as well as just having fun. Sounds good to me. One statistic that startled me was statement:pp. 63-64
"',,,children of poverty start school with a vocabulary of only 10,000 words, compared with 40,000 for kids from middle-class homes."
