As I recall, the Noongyar people of south western Australia recognise six different seasons, based upon changes that occur in the plants and animals around them. It's a very pragmatic system as it doesn't rely upon dates or times. The season changes (for example) when some particular plant starts to flower - not before and not after. Being hunter gatherers, there was no point the tribe packing up and moving on until the next food source was ready.
