OP Thank you for the idea.
I've had quite a bit of googling for it (and surfing biology/botany/zoology textbooks) and came across indeterminate. I know determinate vs. indeterminate from farming; there it meant whether we had to plant once, because the plant would keep bearing, or rip everything out after bearing, and plant two or three times.
No, this was a much more specialized word, specific to the field, I think. That's why I've seen it once and, not being in botany or zoology, never again.
