Actually, the ear is itself a unit of measurement, equal to the size of Oliver Smoot's ear. I would propose that referring to an ear bcoming one size larger would mean that it has increased in size by one deciSmootear.

BTW, when I discovered the smoot markings on the Harvard Bridge the notice recorded in the Wikipedia entry as "plus or minus one ear" was "plus one-half ear."
