I took the above quote to imply that if other things are somehow depriving you of those enjoyments, money alone cannot restore them. If you're sleepless because of stress or guilt, the soft bed won't help; if you have metastatic cancer, money won't cure you; if you are a no good dirty rat and everyone knows it, money won't bring you friends or honor. I don't believe that Garborg was saying that the rich can't have friends, health, pleasure, etc. It's more of an admonition to remember the limitations of money's power, to keep it in perspective.
