How interesting that "cataract" should become a word of the day just when I was thinking about posting regarding it. Recently, I've been re-reading (well, *listening* to, on tape) the Narnia books, and several times CS Lewis refers to cataracts, meaning river rapids or waterfalls, causing me to contemplate how a rather pleasant meaning has been supplanted by a medical condition.
Similarly, the Narnia books talk of carbuncles, meaning a precious red stone, whilst what it brings to my mind is a rather disgusting inflammation.
So now I'm wondering how many other words have meanings as both a medical condition and something pleasant and unrelated to biology. Does anybody have any more?
