I thought harder about heart beats after I made that post, but decided not to change it, because I don't think that third (or second) beat is actually THERE. Both faldage's Indian* drums and Bean's description indicate a pause. So why do we (most of us) mentally fill it in? I wish somebody would give me an aswer. And, how many of you mentally put the "n" back in aswer, hmm? Why do we do that?

*My apologies to anyone whom this term offends. It does make much more sense to use it to mean natives of India. But I grew up calling Native Americans Indians, and since they call themselves that, I am going to take the easy road here. Thank you.

I don't think that third (or second) beat is actually THERE.

Just because there's nothing happening during that beat doesn't mean it isn't there; it *is there in time.

I have no objections my own self to calling Native Americans Indians but in this case in particular, with an audience that has a large number of people who are going to assume sub-continental Indians I figured why be ambiguous? Especially when the subject is drum beats. The difference between the stereotypical Native American drum beat and the Indian Indian drum beat could hardly be greater.

...because I don't think that third (or second) beat is actually THERE. I think you actually® owe some *residuals for that...

I don't actually® speak the word 'two' into my brains' ear, either, but.

So why do we (most of us) mentally fill it in? I wish somebody would give me an aswer.

This reminds me of the human eye/brains' ability to 'smoothe over the rough edges' of animation, yet still be able to *accept subliminal messages.

To whom? Gertrude Stein or John Cage?

E - I had to come up with something for you, so first I googled "actually Gertrude Stein" and found...
http://www.centerforbookculture.org/context/no5/stein.html

... which was rather *enlightening, but said I should "go ask Alice", so I did at:
http://www.pandorabots.com/pandora/talk?botid=f5d922d97e345aa1

...and got this...

m - What is actually?

a - Searching, Searching...

m - What is searching?

a - I'll have to ask my botmaster for an answer.

m - What is a botmaster?

a - A Botmaster is the person who authors and maintains a chatterbot "personality".

m - What is a personality?

a - I need time to formulate the reply.

m - What is formulate?

a - I'll come back to that later.

m - What is later?

a - I would look into the web for that knowledge.

... well, back to the web. One more crack at google where I searched with "later John Cage" and amongst other things, got this...
http://www.newalbion.com/artists/cagej/autobiog.html

"When I asked Schoenberg to teach me, he said, "You probably can't afford my price." I said, "Don't mention it; I don't have any money." He said, "Will you devote your life to music?" This time I said "Yes." He said he would teach me free of charge. I gave up painting and concentrated on music. After two years it became clear to both of us that I had no feeling for harmony. For Schoenberg, harmony was not just coloristic: it was structural. It was the means one used to distinguish one part of a composition from another. Therefore he said I'd never be able to write music. "Why not?" "You'll come to a wall and won't be able to get through." "Then I'll spend my life knocking my head against that wall."

well after that I still haven't read any Gertrude Stein and I think I'll skip that ALICE thing it just seems like it might get in the way of me understanding what John Cage was talking about though he wasn't really talking about anything which is what this is all about.

FWIW, the Procol Harum chord progressions are attributed to JS Bach (but I've never confirmed this).
