I feel like a record with a scratch in it.
And I feel like a nut!
You know, I never thought about it, but slow ones don't stick with me, either.

my off-the-wall hypothesis: the songs that get stuck in your head have a frequency or tempo relationship to your own natural rhythms, so they synchronize with you.
it would be interesting to do a little research about the songs that are most likely to get stuck in your head, and see if they compare favorably as far as tempo or key, etc...

Hmm, eta, you may be on to something. How about a poll? Who finds triple-time more compelling--DAH da da; or four-four beats--DAH da dah da? If we get a clear majority one way or the other, maybe that will give us a clue.
I was thinking that "natural rhythms" might be related to the heartbeat we hear in the womb, but. For me, that triple time beat is "IT", and I don't think hearts beat that way!

well, I think we all have unique patterns of frequencies/harmonics and rhythms, so the songs that get stuck would be unique as well. that being said, there are undoubtedly certain similarities in people. especially people who find themselves drawn to certain people; there would be harmonically comfortable congruencies. e.g. when you meet a person for the first time, you might feel an immediate like or dislike; I think that is based(at least in part) upon our natural, individual harmonic series.
so the songs that stick in your head would be based upon your harmonics.
I for one, however, am drawn to songs in three, and six, and also odd numbered time signatures. many of the pieces I have written are in five, or seven, or nine. not quite sure what that says about me!

It'd be particularly interesting if a person who didn't have perfect pitch always got stuck with songs in the same key.

We need a heart doctor here, but as I remember it, Native American drum beats are supposed to mimic the heart beat and they are basically in three: buh BUMP (pause) buh BUMP (pause) buh BUMP (pause)

Jackie, I can stop looking for IT now...

Faldage - Thanks for reminding me. That is something I learned 'very early' and have never once since heard accurately portrayed.

(ps - 'Very Early' - Bill Evans (a Jazz Waltz))
(pps - I vote for any prime number)
(ppps - Yes 'two' is prime, but it shares properties with 'one' that I won't get into... yet.)

We're doing an Ives piece that has one measure in 3½/4 time and one in 4½/4 time. Beat that for odd.

It's just a clearer (to some) way of writing 7/8 and 9/8... well, clearer towards the composer's intent, at least.

I have observed my husband's heart beating on a number of occasions and his resting rhythm is definitely a 3/4 time dealy: Three ONE (two) Three ONE (two) Three ONE (two)... with the brackets indicating no noise on the two-beat, and the caps indicating the strong noise on the ONE-beat.

Jackie - Your survey just got a bit more complicated. Bean has raised the bet to the "power of two".
