A while back we had a thread about finding a term for those songs that get stuck in your head and you can't seem to get out. We did finally come up wiht a bonafide word for this condition, courtesy tsuwm I think. But I can't find the thread (Dr. Bill, can you ferret it out for us?). Here is a new article about the top songs responsible for this condition. The piece also cites a German term for this: earworm. I like earworm, and I'm going to keep using it for this..."Don't mention that song, you'll give me earworm!"  Like P franz did to me recently when he mentioned, "Condo, condo, condo, connnndooooo!" that's a parody of "Quando, quando, quando, quannnndoooo," folks  http://makeashorterlink.com/?X30B250A3

And, oh yeah, I meant to add to stimulate discussion ...what songs trigger this ailment and stick in your head the most? Any of those mentioned in the article? And I think there's a difference between songs you like sticking in your head, and the ones you hate that you just can't seem to get rid of...the latter is real earworm, I believe.
So do we need a new word for songs you like sticking in your head? Does earworm point only to the negativity of an affliction, or does it cover it all?

well, earworm sounds like "earwig" to me, and I just can't stand those nasty little bugs...

When University of Cincinnati researchers tried to find out what song gets stuck in our heads the most, the non-answer they came up with was quite revealing: Other. As in, there were way too many titles for a single poll to tally.
Almost all of us suffer through this mental torture of having a song stuck on replay in our brains, repeating itself over and over and over until we want to just scream. If this happens to you frequently, we're very sorry to inform you that those University of Cincinnati researchers have determined you have slightly neurotic tendencies. Either that or you just enjoy music and listen to it often. (Personally, we're opting for the second choice.)
Study leader James Kellaris did emphasize that people who suffer this mental torture frequently aren't seriously neurotic--just prone to worrying and anxiety and may have neurotic habits like biting pencils or tapping fingernails. (Oh, that makes us feel better.)
Which songs get stuck? Kellaris explained to Reuters that when we get a song stuck in our heads, it's usually the first or last song we heard in a specific situation, such as the song playing on the clock radio alarm or the song on the car radio when we turned off the ignition. "Just about anything can get stuck in people's heads," Kellaris told Reuters. "We each have our personal demonic tunes that get stuck in our heads, I guess."
But stuck songs, which the Germans call "earworm," tend to have these features in common:
They are relatively simple.
They are repetitive.
They contain an element that surprises the listener, such as an interrupted pattern or something that violates expectations of what comes next.
The most common culprits are songs with lyrics.
They stay stuck in our heads for a few hours on average.
Women are more likely than men to be annoyed, frustrated, or irritated by "earworm," and this, more than any other aspect of this mental torture, puzzles the researchers the most.
So what do you do to erase the stuck song from your brain? Kellaris advises you not to worry about it. (If you take him up on his advice, just don't listen to Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" or you're sure to just trade one stuck song for another.) Other tips include listening to different music or distracting yourself with another activity. You can also try singing the entire song--and not just the snippet that's stuck in your head--even if you can't quite remember all the lyrics. There's even a folklore cure: Chew on cinnamon sticks.
The research was presented at the Society for Consumer Psychology Winter Conference in New Orleans.

I have a vague idea what the former sounds like, but just a very vague idea. It doesn't even include a tune or anything passing for one. The latter is totally outside my experience. I suppose this qualifies as blissful ignorance.

Considering the first two (you) listed as the *top, that society could be justifying it's own research by paying for the repetition that produces those results.
I wonder if there is a Society for Psycological Investment and Risk Reduction that sets the odds in its own casino..?

Well, Faldage, "Baby Back Ribs" is an ad jingle that would be foreign to the televisonally-challenged. But, if you saw the movie, Austin Powers, Fat Bastard sings a parody of this jingle when he wants to eat the baby.
