Pansil (Pali) [from Sanskrit panca-sila from panca five + sila practice, behavior] The five moral precepts imbodied in practice
which every Buddhist, layman and bhikkhu (or bhikshu), promises to observe. Taking pansil publicly is tantamount to becoming a
Buddhist. It consists of undertaking abstinence from 1) injuring or killing any living thing (panatipata veramani sikkhapadam
samadiyami); 2) theft or taking that which is not given (adinnadana veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami); 3) immoral sensual
enjoyment (kamesu michchhachara veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami); 4) false speech or lying (musavada veramani
sikkhapadam samadiyami); and 5) intoxication as tending to becloud and weaken the mind (sura-meraya-majja-pamada-tthana
veramani sikkhapadam samadiyami).

Menehune

No Frames
Navigation Info

Also known as Nawao. Hawaii's legendary mystical and shy forest dwellers, small in size (about 3 ft
tall), but according to legend, very industrious master builders that use their great strength to
accomplish mighty feats of engineering and construction overnight.

The Menehune are also said to possess magical powers and to have created major projects throughout
the Hawaiian Islands, such as the Menehune Ditch (an aqueduct that funnels water for irrigation from
the Waimea River) and the Alekoko Fishpond (also called Menehune Fishpond).

According to folklore, the Menehune works at night so as not to be seen by others. They cut,
transport, and fit stones for their projects in a fireman's bucket brigade like method. If they are
discovered, their work would stop and be abandoned.

Popularly, they are described as playful pot-bellied hairy and muscular elves two or three feet tall, with
bushy eyebrows over large eyes and a short nose with a trace of mischievousness. Some think that
there is more to it than just a popular legend, and that the Menehune is some kind of Hawaiian
mysterious primate, such as the Teh-lma from the Himalayas. See Abominable Snowman, Almas,

springerle

Definition: [SPRING-uhr-lee;
SHPRING-uhr-luh] One of Germany's
most famous Christmas sweets, the
anise-flavored springerle are beautiful
embossed cookies that originated
centuries ago in the German duchy of
Swabia. The embossed designs on the
cookie's surface are formed with a
special carved wooden rolling pin,
which, when rolled over the dough, imprints it
decoratively. Alternatively, the dough can be pressed
into a carved cookie mold. Once the dough is
imprinted with the design, the cookies are allowed to
sit out at room temperature overnight. This allows the
dough's surface to dry so the design will remain as the
cookie bakes.

Instead of my giving the definition of this word, which I have not yet found, you can go to
Carolyn's Corner and play a little word game that contains it.
