List of winning spelling bee words, gives as 1955 winner as "custaceology". There ain't no such word. Can it be that a whole bunch of people goofed? My guess is that an "r" was omitted after the first letter. The crusty old crustacean. Check it out at: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0862710.html

I'll bet there's a misprint on the site and agree with you, wwh, that probably crustaceology was the word intended--but I'll go hunting through some sources to check out this cussed custacelology!
Here's something from MW on crustaceology with a synonym you might like:
"Carcinology \Car`ci*nol"o*gy\, n. [Gr. ? a crab + -logy.] (Zo["o]l.) The department of zo["o]logy which treats of the Crustacea (lobsters, crabs, etc.); -- called also malacostracology and crustaceology. Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, © 1996, 1998 MICRA, Inc."

Dear WW: your carcinology reminded me of anecdote told me by a Brown grad patient at McLean Hospital many years ago. He brought his date into frat house, only to find one of his buddies, drunk and nude, with magnifying glass and tweezers picking "crabs" out of his pubic hair.
