Segno is indeed a very common word: like tag, label... for example,when you close a book, and you are not able to open it again at the page you previously were, we say that you "hai perso( = you lost ) il segno"

Musicians, of course, are very familiar with segno. Slight tangent here: There's a terrific website that has a huge collection of signs and symbols. Curiously, segno is not included although some musical signs appear on the list. The site is one that would offer hours of exploration if one were so inclined. Switching to other kinds of signs, does anybody know the name for the street signs that iindicate that something is forbidden by a cirlcle with a diagonal slash mark through it?
