I've searched for the International Imitation Ernest Hemingway Contest on google, but haven't found anything more recent than 1999. Is the contest still going on each year?

I found it. I wasn't really looking for it. But it appeared, like so much flotsam after the tide recedes. For what it's worth, here it is. That's it. There is no more. Now I need a drink. You know any place around here that takes Euros?

I thought "Bad Hemingway" was a tautology.

So I missed it already. Well it is October. It is a good month. Nonetheless, I plan to go home and have a few drinks, but I won't get tight.

> Harry Potter and the Gimlet on Fire

I've been following Ern round the world recently, the drinking is coming along just fine (although Harry's bar was a disappointment) and I even went to a bullfight, although I am starting to falter, I just can't bring myself to shoot enough wild animals to keep up. Next stop, Havanna.

This reminds me of the fat man who slimmed down- shed nearly 3 stone (40 pounds). At Christmas, a friend who had not seen him for a while sent him a fine leather belt as a present, but it was, of course, far too big for his new, slimline self.
He sent a thank-you letter, but added the line - - -

"For whom the belt holes?

I believe there's also a "Bad Faulkner Contest"...but winning that one should be a cinch. You just start writing one sentence and never stop!

And 'how bout a "Bad Joyce Contest"? A parody of Joyce...now there's a neat trick!

how bout a "Bad Joyce Contest"

Canajun comedian Lorne Elliott has a funny set piece about languages, and at one point he's talking about someone from Shediac (very mixed English/French part of Canada) and he relates this story:

"I was talking to someone from Shediac and he didn't know the English name for woodpecker - fair enough - he said, 'Hey, what you call dat funny red bird goes tak-tak-tak smash his face all day gainst da log?' "

after the laughter subsides Lorne adds,

"James Joyce could not have written that sentence...."

Eh, maybe you had to be there....'tis pretty damn funny to hear it, though!

If you can't see the bright side, polish the dull side.
