Last year my AP English teacher played this song by Rush for us:

"Xanadu"

To seek the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
To break my fast on honey dew
And drink the milk of paradise...'

I had heard the whispered tales
Of immortality
The deepest mystery
From an ancient book. I took a clue
I scaled the frozen mountain tops
Of eastern lands unknown
Time and Man alone
Searching for the lost --- Xanadu

Xanadu --- To stand within The Pleasure Dome
Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste anew the fruits of life
The last immortal man
To find the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
Oh, I will dine on honey dew
And drink the milks of Paradise

A thousand years have come and gone
But time has passed me by
Stars stopped in the sky
Frozen in an everlasting view
Waiting for the world to end
Weary of the night
Praying for the light
Prison of the lost --- Xanadu

Xanadu --- Held within The Pleasure Dome
Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste my bitter triumph
As a mad immortal man
Nevermore shall I return
Escape these caves of ice
For I have dined on honey dew
And drunk the milk of Paradise

Well, Madonna's Cherish mentions Romeo and Juliet; and I can't believe that people have forgotten Dire Straits' take on Romeo and Juliet, the name of which escapes me and I can't be bothered to look it up... I'm glad someone got to Led Zeppelin quick smart - there's also a couple more with references to LOTR.

Cream [Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker] has a song about Ulysses, but I must say it's always annoyed me, for one very specific reason: it talks about poor Ulysses, his ears tormented by the Sirens. Sorry! He deliberately left his ears unbound so that he could hear them and yet not die. So I have no sympathy!

belM: I think the song you mean is "Fire" performed by the Pointer Sisters:

"Well Romeo and Juliet, Samson and Delilah
Baby you can bet - a love they couldn't deny.
My words say 'split', but my words they lie etc. etc."

U2 pops Biblical references into their songs from time to time (I'm thinking of the Joshua Tree album in particular).

Both ABBA and Al Stewart have songs about Cassandra, from the Trojan legends - very poignant.

Are we allowed to include songs that mention famous types, or should that be another thread? I'm thinking of another Al Stewart song, Antarctica:

The hopeless quest of Shackleton
the dreamlike death of Scott
