It just occurred to me that "wattle and daub" might be the first example of a "composite" a term now used for such things as Kevlar.

as Bingley suggests, dates given thusly indicate the earliest known citation. this one is actually earlier than that found by "the professor and the madman" (1857 in David Livingstone's Missionary Travels...), but the OED does cite "dawbe", material for daubing walls, in 1446.

As a material scientist, I always gravitate to these threads. Although there may be other examples, the first use of an artificial composite that I'm aware of is clay bricks reinforced with straw. This dates back to the very first civilizations. Of course, wood is a fine example of a natural composite - one of the reasons it is still unequalled as a building material.

This tabby made me think of the wattle and daub
Curiously enough, nobody so far noted the connection with adobe which looks rather obvious to me: it refers to the same composite wall material.
