TRY boe+ or TRI boe+ the emission of light from various substances usu. in flashes due to grinding, crushing or tearing apart; thought to be due to plezoelectric discharge. from tribo-, stemming from a Greek root meaning friction, + luminescence, the low-temperature emission of light. this phenomenon is also called plezoluminescence. http://wordsmith.org/board/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=wordplay&Number=45223

In case you don't want to read the whole thread, I just want to remind you all that one of the coolest things to do on a summer's night--fireflies out there, owls hooting, you're deep in a piney wood--is to stand face to face with someone you get a big kick out of, and each of you put a WintoGreen LifeSaver into your mouth, and crunch down hard at the same instant!!
Now that's a tribal rite of passage to be shared with everybody you love!
And from that tribal root comes the true root of meaning of triboluminescence which really means to illuminate the tribe members through mutual observation of sparks flying out of the lips and mouth!
Best regards, WordWinnower now a Veteran and I've got the battle scars to prove it!!

No, triboluminescence refers to the torches on the Survivor show.

TEd, could you recheck your source? Might this be a typo for piezoluminescence? Neither appears in bartleby, but I am spectualting for other words with the piezo- prefix.

Might this be a typo?, was the question. You answered rather obstructively, in effect -well, I was his source, dare you think that capital "I" would typo?a) If... that would be my typo. (indefinite, imperial) b) That is my typo. (definite, manly.) Why is it that others can nit-pick and I can't? I hope "wdf?" doesn't mean "what de ____?". That would be rude. FYIIAEWIHTEMJ. (for your information, I am embarrassed when I have to explain my jokes.) Non-the-less...

...and i tend to be rude when i am made butt of a joke i don't get. [shrugs] p.s. - the 'd' was for 'da'... it's a regional thing. http://home.mn.rr.com/wwftd/
