I've been thinking that it's rather odd that Anu doesn't do any posting on this message board. He's set up this great place for us to discuss language, and he has not graced us with his knowledge on the subject. He surely has vast wisdom that he could share with us, but he seems to be silent, unless of course, he's using some arcane moniker and not telling us. . .

have you taken a gander at his list of interests? it's amazing that he found the time or energy just to add this feature. [thanks, anu!]

I have always assumed that, aside from being inordinately busy, Anu has made a conscious decision to stay out and let the Board belong to the people who post. ( I canNOT adjust to calling a person a poster!)

Had Jackie actually done so, I would have considered her an imposter.

Funny you mention the word "imposter" I was only discussing it with a friend a couple of days ago (sad lives, you appreciate).
A friend was looking for a film called "The Impostors". She couldn't find it because she only searched on "imposters" and had never realised that there was an alternative spelling - is there a difference in usage or are the two interchangeable? Any views?

As regards difficulty in calling someone a "poster" one ought not get hung up about it. No point in going to the mat over this issue. Perhaps if you framed it another way. [Stop me!]

Perhaps we who enter messages on this billboard should refer to ourselves and each other as STICKERS.
This, of course, in memory of our ancestor of that name who was forever being threatened with prosecution. (I must admit I haven't seen a notice containing that threat for a significant number of years)

I have already taken the first step down the path paved with good intentions. And why not, dear Max? We have only hypothetical evidence - and that of the most tenuous nature - to suggest to where that path leads. Could it not be that the hypothesis refered to above was promulgated by those who wished to have the broad, flower-bedecked, gently sloping path to themselves? This would, possibly, account for the strong marketing campaign that has been mounted, over the centuries, for a route that has little or no intrinsic attractiveness other than its advertised destination which, equally with the broad path, is based on assertions that can only be described as dead dodgy.

Good heavens, Rhuby, I actually followed The Broad Path (the explanation, not literally!). Now as to the end of that path, I feel that I have more than "hypothetical evidence" of its existence, every time I hear someone say Ant-ART-ica or orientate! I don't think I care much for the idea of being called a sticker, either. After all, to what are we sticking? Electrons? Each other? Though I do like that last one--I'll gladly stick with you, even if you lead me to a dead end!

....which reminds me of my favourite piece of graffiti - underneath the official notice "BILL POSTERS WILL BE PROSECUTED", someone has scrawled "Bill Posters is innocent!" (An old one, I know, but still a goodie).

MARTY................MATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
S'me - stales - great to see you back, it's been well over a year!
See you at the 'G' for the Collingwood game on July 7? Or just for a lager after the match? I'll be in town for a week.

Sweet stales,
I think you fell prey to what many of us have when old threads are brought back up. And darn it, I wish he really was back, too! However--I sent him your post. We can hope.

Datum may not be in common use, but in the technical area of mapping (and geographic information systems) it is still a very important concept. OTOH, I have no idea whether the GIS usage has the same etymology.
