As a big fan of the social commentary, innumerable literary allusions, and other political and historical references in each episode of the Simpsons, I used to struggle to justify why I thought it was a redeeming show. That the Univ. of California at Berkley has offered a graduate-level course on satire called "Satire in Society: The Simpsons," my burden of proof is somewhat lowered.

Long live Itchy.

Max asks: why do I always want to spell it D'Oh?

Probably because that's the way it's spelled.

No gaffe, Maximus. The OED recognises both variants, and relates it tangentially to other words like 'duh'.

According to The Simpsons the name 'Homer' became a noun roughly meaning 'a clumsy and often stupid mistake leading to a fortuitously positive outcome'. I think it was due to him reacting completely foolishly during a reactor overload, but somehow, managing so to avoid a catastrophe. As an example in that episode they had Dennis Rodman fall over while trying to complete a play landing in a group of friendly cheerleaders and proclaiming, 'Oh, I did a Homer'!

mav notes, re D'oh vs. Doh : The OED recognises both variants

There is, however, a slight catch in the word, at least as spoken by Homer S. that is, in my opinion, best captured by the '.

As Cletus (the slack-jawwed yokel) climbs the telephone pole to retrieve a pair of gym shoes hanging on the wires - he says... "Dang, I just got me 'n eyedeer... I can call maw from 'ere... Hey Maw, get off the dang roof...

(That on always floors me)

"They say that some folks won't eat skunk,
But then again, some folks'll...
He's Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel!"

The dumb server in my roommate's computer network is aptly named Cletus...

Perhaps a new thread is in order for favorite Simpsons moments?
