Does anyone know where the phrase 'big fish in a little pond' comes from? I'm having a really hard time finding out.
If you don't know, do you know someone who might know?
Cheers,
Kelly

WAY back in high school I recall reading an assigned essay which was all about choosing whether to be a big fish in a small pond or vice versa. It was an oldish essay even then (mid 1940s) Can't recall name or author. Any retired American Lit teachers around to help out?

Not at all. I wasn't implying that you, wow, were AnnaS, I was simply apologising to her for using her harrumph®

My apology.

Not necessary. I hope that all the wonderful mothers of AWAD have a great Sunday, when they catch up with those of us already there.

I got it immediately, Max. and remember: you are welcome to harrumph any time you wish, as long as you keep using that little RintheCircle.

completely beside the point
but downstairs from my apartment the owners have a pond with fish.
one day my girlfriend referred to them as "kingyo", goldfish.
they were koi.
and one of them kept me company at about 2 a.m. last night when i was out on the balcony on the 14th floor drinking whisky, by splashing around in the pond.
recently, everyone here has koi flags up.
max,
your pun escaped me too by the way!
