I was going to send this message to a number of you privately since it really has nothing directly to do with AWADTalk, but when I realised the number I'd have to PM, I decided to risk the Wrath of AnnaS and do it here.

Sandra and I have sold the house, handed in our notices and are making plans for our move to the UK. Some of you will know that this includes an intended extended tour across the US. We will endeavour to visit as many of those of you who have made the mistake of thinking that meeting me/us will somehow enhance your lives as we can.

We will probably cross the water to the US in mid-June. I'll post a fuller itinerary to Max's i-Drive when we know what we're doing. There's gotta be a first time for everything.

Thank your for your anticipated forbearance for the abuse of this forum!

Well, CK, may I offer you warm greetings from the old country, and hope that you will settle happily among us, when you finally arrive. Let it be said straight away that any help that I can offer you, is yours for the asking.
I'm looking forward to welcomming you at some point.

Thanks Max, I appreciate the sentiment even if I couldn't fully understand the verse. As for your comments on the aptness of my handle, Capital will apply regardless. Provided that you are prepared to swallow one of its other definitions, to wit, "excellent".

Happy packing, CK and SWMBO. I await with great anticipation the posting of your itinerary and your periodic (and profuse, I hope) updates on your adventures. I know that your itinerary will include a swing through lower Michigan, won't it?!?!?!

We're keeping the actual route top secret so that the forces of darkness won't be able to anticipate our every move*, but I don't doubt that southern Michigan will be in there somewhere**

* We haven't planned our actual route yet

Seeing that proverb inverted from its regular order suggests one of two things: (a) You're standing on your head to acclimatise to life at the bottom of the world or (3), it was a subtle clue that anastrophe figures on your route.

Blame P.M. Ryan, not me. I rather liked it the first time I saw it. Should toitu he Aotearoa come before ngarongaro he tangata? e.g. NZ remains although people disappear? Bloody typical! Although what of, I'm not sure.

Hi all, just leapt in here to tell you that part 3 is now posted to http://www.bacchus-marsh.com. No photos yet, but I'll insert them post-hoc as appropriate once I get some in digital format.

CLICK ON THE LINKS ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE PAGE TO SEE THE STORIES.

Sorry, don't have time (someone else's Internet connection) to poke around. But the number of posts mounting up is frightening.

Hope you're all enjoying the drivel, anyhow. I keep myself amused while driving thinking about what I'm going to say next. Then surprise myself anyhow.

Hi all,

Hope not too many people are not able to read it. Wow, I suggest you try using MS Explorer (if you aren't already). I can't really afford the resources to control for Nutscrape's built-in problems, I have enough difficulties with IE5 ...

There are now PICCIES in some of the pages and there will be more when I learn to drive properly on the wrong side of the road.

Cheers all!

Max, you're both right and wrong. "Edinburgh" is the "Town of Edin". It was once called "Dunedin", but it means "Edin under the hill or below" (approximately, I'm no Gaelic expert), but it's not exactly the same thing. "Edin under the hill" transliterated as "Edinburgh of the South" isn't so far away.

And I still haven't learned to drive wrongly on the right. Did I get that right? Or left? Or just wrong?

Macfarlane's Dictionary (http://www.ceantar.org/Dicts/MF2/ lists:

dùn
nm. g.v. dùin; pl. dùin, heap, mount, mound, fortress, fortification

which sounds like a pretty good translation of the Sassenach burgh

On the Sunday we braved the public transport system

You've now done something that probably 99.44% of LA residents have never ever done. Most of them have probably never even thought it was possible.

You must be exaggerating, at least a little bit. LA has a fairly extensive public transport system, and it's heavily used. Also we found that people were very friendly and helpful when we got confused about which bus or train to catch. Kudos to LA - I never thought I'd leave it having liked being there!

My nomination for quip of the year.

Actually, my idea of Hell is that there is only one place to eat, the (one) McDonalds. [See the chapter in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man where the retreat leader gives a detailed description of Hell.]

Parts 11 and 12 were uploaded tonight. Sorry for the delay or the uploading, depending on your point of view.

I'm stymied from time to time by the presence or absence of Prodigy local access numbers. Why would Barstow have two while Albuquerque only has one? In fact, all of New Mexico only has one. Woe, woe!

This latest installment floors me... not 'cause I had anything to do with it... but that the "international" impressionists that make Chicago a gangster town could really use some help, as they have been slacking off lately.

When the US invades Canada and adds the north shore of Superior to its dominions as the 51st state, I will be the very first to include the north shore of Superior into the map of the US.

all these years we've been going to the "North Shore" to escape the summer heat in Minneapolis, and now I learn I should have been looking out for immigration officials?!
actually, it was the 4th of July celebrations in Grand Marais that really threw me off....

There's an old geography trivia question: What pairs of states are adjacent both geographically and alphabetically? Technically one of the answers should be Michigan and Minnesota, but I wouldn't advise trying to drive it; Lake Superior can be awfully deep and awfully cold.

I have just been planning a trip to the Isle of Wight (Proms at Osborne House, tomorrow evening so we are spending the whole day there) and while trying to find a particular attraction on the Internet map, asked for driving instructions from my house in Portsmouth. It directs me precisely to the Isle of Wight ferry terminal in Portsmouth, without calling it such, and then says "take the unnamed road for 6 miles to Ryde!".
Which reminds me of the Autoroute CD which provided up to 4 alternate routes for journeys. The 4th alternative for Portsmouth to Warwick involved taking one ferry across to the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth and one back to Southampton, replacing 30 miles of motorway by two ferries and 30 miles of local roads! Since the ferry ride to the Isle of Wight is generally reckoned as one of the most expensive per mile in the world , I never did try that.

I don't know if http://mapquest.com has ever gotten a mention, but.
michigan doesn't quite get any north shore -- click on "big map" and "zoom out".

okay, wow, I removed that wide link just for you -- the whole point of which was to show that there are 120+ american miles of the north shore of lake superior inside the great state (not province) of minnesota.

well, that's very wide -- I'll remove it later....

The US EPA has a number of GIS maps and satelite images-- many that are downloadable.

http://www.great-lakes.net/gis/maps/ most are not as clear on state divisions as the map quest but it has a great collection of maps..and images..

okay, wow, I removed that wide link just for you

Oh, tsuwm, you dear man. Thank you for the change. And AnnaS for your note. The change did make everything go back to usual width again.
What I do not understand is how a post in the middle of a "page" can affect the posts before it, too!
One of AWAD's little mysteries!
Thank you again, tsuwm, for your consideration.
And my apologies to everyone now wondering what happened to tsuwm's nifty link.

wow,

The page widens to accomodate the link. Therefore all posts above and below will be widened accordingly. I don't know of any way to architect ahem a web page so that it widens only on the specific post. Think newspaper columns and you'll understand

Oh. And tsuwm's nifty link is still there. Just narrower

Somebody sent me a site showing the distance between the US and Jakarta. It did include a link for driving directions but not being able to drive anyway I didn't bother to LIU.

Would it not also need a ferry between Kamchatka, the Aleutians, and Alaska?

C'mon, you guys! All you'd need to do, Bingley, is drive onto the long-distance ferry, and come right on over.
Though you do have to transfer after being put ashore on
Australia and then driving over the bridge to New Zealand,
right, CapK?

Of course. Driving to the US is entirely possible. What am I saying?

Anyway, the next instalment of our ongoing saga has now been chiselled in runes on the Internet wall. You have 2,000 years to read it before wind and the other effluxions of time remove it from sight ...

Max, dear, I came to the tropics because the English winter was too much for me. A "hard enough" winter in the Aleutians does not bear thinking of.

2,000 years? Really?
My first grandchild just came into our life 3 days ago and I only have eyes for her right now, so I hope I have that much time to catch up with your superb travel journals.
This is really good news. Then I will be able to reread the complete series in some future time. Maybe when I get off this "graniness" wagon.

Well, WC, congratulations on your state of granniness. I'm told that it's the same every time, but I can't speak from experience. Enjoy!

CK, I am still enjoying your travelogues immensely. A colleague just passed me a link you might enjoy:

RodW : that is a neat link. Wasted (?) a fun half hour there.

Yes, and in exactly the same way as residents of Lapland are called Lapdancers ...

And I would, if I had time, which I don't. We're tourists, not travellers, make no mistake about it. On this trip we have had five dates about which we had to be very clear over a period of two months. That's four too many for a real traveller.

Anyone can sleep in a car on an interstate. It takes real style to be able to sleep on Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah Valley.

Yuppie tourists like us have a slightly different set of skills.
We need to be able to identify a possible motel location, sight unseen, in a town we've never been to before we get there by correlating the addresses of known motels.

We need to be able to identify business loops by deduction on a 4 x 4 inset map of a city.

We're able to deduce the amount of activity in a town by the number of cars parked outside the local Super 8 motel and thereby determine what kind of room rate we can negotiate.

And on, and on.

I know tourists, and Capital Kiwi, you're no tourist.
Tourists don't write fantastic journals, they usually just write "Wish you were here" on a skimpy postcard and go on their merry way.

Have a look at the web site. I've added an email from a friend of Sandra's who has just spent three months in New York. Her views of the Big Apple are an absolute riot.

Laugh and enjoy!

I was going to send this message to a number of you privately since it really has nothing directly to do with AWADTalk, but when I realised the number I'd have to PM, I decided to risk the Wrath of AnnaS and do it here

I just finished the Washington, D.C. installment and I must warn you--there is a groupie in the making!

You picked a hot day to visit but I can see it has not fried the wordy part of your brain...still wonderful, still evocative images!
So I thank my lucky star that on that momentous day Tuesday, April 24 16:23:19 2001 you decided to risk life and limb to share your travel journals with us.
May the god of travel keep a very good eye on you and protect you from all travelling harm

Thanks WC for the kind words. And, as a special bonus, I've just put the third last instalment up. More in about 48 hours ...

an IMAX film about flight in the theatre at the museum .... got motion sickness. I rather dislike paying to be made ill (except when I’m buying beer, of course), and we are now firmly of the opinion that IMAX is not all it’s cracked up to be. They throw up huge format movies on the screen and the audience throws up pop corn on the floor.
http://www.bacchus-marsh.com/Files/Part 26.htm

I know what you mean, CK – but I therefore suggest you avoid France’s leading tourist attraction Futuroscope like the plague!

A single IMAX is to a dinghy on a millpond like Futuroscope is to a cruise ship going over Niagara. For anyone else, I can warmly recommend it – the combined display of pyrotechnics, lasers and cinema over shallow pools of water at the end of the evening is stunning! It also cleverly manages to tie together all the elements of light and dark, image and imagination, and truth and illusion you will have experienced throughout the day.

But the food’s still a ripoff!

And did those feet, in ancient times, walk upon ... naw, hang on, jeez!
