Not a new one, sorry, but the one that always bugged me...
"Wreck On The Highway".."Blood and glass all around and no
body prayed." This goes back to the 30's I think...maybe early 40's. Gross, but popular at that time.

"If I'd Shot You Sooner, I'd Be Out of Jail by Now"

Lessee now, could that one go something like this? (nasal):

Oh, why-yi-yi-yi-yi, didn't I just go on ahead,
Take some action, like my Daddy always said?
'Stead, I let it dra-a-ag out--
I watched you cry and pout.
Oh, why, didn't I just go on ahead?

Chorus
I wouldn't'a shot you at aw-aw-aw-aw-awl,
But I kept on seein' yew in the hawls.
All you did was tease me, when I wanted you to please me...
And then you had to grab me by the b---s.

You'll be in trouble when the gutter police catch you.

Oh, you are the gutter police. Ah well, where to now?

And there's a real C&W song out there called something like "I Could Either Shoot Myself or I Could Just Go Bowling".

After reading nemo's experience with the Britney Spears cjibe, I shall heroically restrain myself from commenting on this genre.

Are you talking about Britney in Swahili or something now? Whichever, it sounds vicious. I await a translation with bated (and baited) breath.

It means a maritime jest. It is a common word up our way. I'm anaspeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericumbobulation.

C'mon, Maxie, you could have just used plain English, like "Je suis desole".

okay, y'all knew that I had a bunch of real titles stuck in my hip pocket:

o How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away?

o I've Been Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart

o I Keep Forgettin' I Forgot About You

o My Wife Ran Off With My Best Friend And I Sure Do Miss Him

and, of course...
o Drop-Kick Me Jesus Through The Goalposts Of Life

Country-Western songs have such great titles ... to me they are so *American* (Forgive me Canadian friends.)

Oh, and is there a similar genre of Canadian songs?
How about other countries? Anyone?
C-W songs make the Pop and Classic titles seem so ...well, ordinary.

[hide head in shame emoticon] I have to admit I have no idea if there is similar C&W type music in Canada. In Québec we mostly have "voice of the people" singers who sing in "joual" - the oral slang used by the common man.

Of course Canada has county music! You even have your own "coal miners daughter" Anne Murray.

Her father was a coal miner in Nova Scotia-- where the mines run out under the ocean-- and a cave in mean drowning.
and any number of "american" country singers are really canadians (Gorden Lightfoot, etc).. but it is country music, not Country/western -- well I only know of country music .. I don't much like c/w, here and there a song, but its not in my top ten list of favorite types. There might well be Canadian C/W music available on station in centeral canada--(never been there) and never looked for it.

Country music, old style (my preference) or more modern country-- is an extention of "folk music"-- and american folk music is as old as the ages-- "Barbara Allen" is still sung.

People tend to groan when they hear the name Anne Murray, mostly because she's the only singer from the East Coast that everyone's heard of, and people keep giving her awards all the time, as if there will never be another famous East Coast singer!

I don't think we have an equivalent of Country and Western the way the Americans do it, but we do have famous singers who sang about Canadian stuff during that same era, and likely in that same style. Stompin' Tom Connors comes to mind. (Of course, he's from the East Coast, so you can't really call him Country'n'Western). Wilf Carter? I think I've just exhausted my C'n'W knowledge base.

The problem is that many Americans don't know which of "their" famous people are actually Canadian. And then we get much of our entertainment from the US, so they don't tell us. So then we don't know either. And we find out years later that so-and-so was actually Canadian.

Oh Bean. I LOVE Stompin Tom. He is such a gem. I remember listening to his show when I was young. Thanks for the memory boost.

Great big C is a fabulous East coast / Maritime band.

The New Zealand population is divided up into two types of people: Those who hate country music (which is what it is generally called here) and those who don't.*

As a former muso, I got quite used to some drunken sot wanting my rock band to play "Old Shep" or some such other dreadful thing, and since our singer was versatile, we generally did them. The requestor and his/her mates would sing along and generally one or two of them would cry if the song was sad - you know, the "my dogie left me for another cowpoke" kind of stuff. They were pretty sad themselves, usually.

I'd say that about 10% of NZers love country music and another, say, 20% don't dislike country music - and then there's the rest of us!

* All figures are based on a scientifically designed and carried out survey with a sample population of n = 1

Yes, AnnaS, that is true...but isn't the US responsible for Britney Spears?

Just today, my husband reported that Ms. Spears said in an interview that she likes being famous because she gets to "travel across the ocean to other countries like Canada." Where is she from, Hawaii?

"If the phone don't ring, you know it's me"

that kinda reminds me of one of my favorite answering machine messages:

"Hi. I am probably home, I'm just avoiding someone I don't like. Leave
me a message, and if I don't call back, it's you."

She's from Louisiana. Maybe it's those weird Napoleonic laws requiring that one travel across an ocean before entering another country.

Dear AnnaS,

Yes, I thought that was what you meant, but I think if we start comparing the number of annoying people to come out of each country, things could turn nasty, and I'm not sure who would come out on top!

Actually, I knew she wasn't from Hawaii, although I was not sure exactly where she was from. I just wanted to point out that I knew that it's not inconceivable that an American would have to cross the ocean to come to Canada.

There's an ocean going ferry from Bar Harbor Maine to Nova Scotia. Would that be "crossing" an ocean ? Not.

Bette Midler is from Hawaii.

If you're going to cross an ocean, it helps to know where you're going. Once, sometime around the spring of 1990, I found myself on a flight into Newark Airport. As we prepared to land, the Stewardess announced the gate locations of connecting flights, including one to the Soviet Union. What do you suppose were the chances it ever landed?

and another ferry from Portland to NS-- but i checked my atlas (old atlas--new to being with me at work!) and the ferry crosses the Gulf of Maine Not as well known as gulf of Mexico-- but it seem to start at cape code and go up to the bay of Fundy.

I think it's probably fair to say that although Ms Spears may be young, may be a virgin, is definitely famous, can't hold a tune and is definitely blonde, she's pretty ignorant.

But she's not stupid. Look at us, discussing her. If she wants fame, well she's clearly got it.
