Wordsmith.org Forums General Topics Q&A about words Suffix -el to -le
OP Can anyone suggest why and when the Anglo-Saxon suffix -el was changed to -le, but keeping the same pronunciation? E.g. "riddel" in A-S became "riddle".
----please, draw me a sheep----
I suspect that the spelling change was due to some change in pronunciation.
