Why is it that the words over the past few months have been relatively easy?

Well--my only guess is that there really is a finite number of "real" (in a dictionary) words in English; and there is already at least one web site devoted to Worthless Words (hi, tsuwm). So I reckon Anu is "stuck with" presenting words that are not completely obscure or archaic.
