I take your word for it, that it is an actual word. I cannot find it even in OneLook. Not that I mind at all, because it was getting lonely on this site, Rhub and Tromb seem to have disappeared and I feared you had too.
I presume this is some medical procedure? I am just curious because it is a neat word. Now, what to do with it becomes the problem.
o > b: mobility (and backtrack): but I'll keep at it.

Hi, Luke - I'm just guessing what it could mean, is all, based on a slight acquaintance with anatomy dating back to the secondary school!

And the 'doc' did say he was 'constructing' a word, hence I guessed a medical procedure as well, based on the word "iliac", which means something anatomical as well. I know iliotomy is not in any dictionary I have. I'm sure he will get back to us. Moving on from 'iliotomy' is the problem: I've been hacking away at it for a couple hours now.

Me, too. Even changing two letters doesn't really help!

There are a number of two-word combinations that work, actual thoughts. But we may be at an impasse, not that it has not happened before.

ILIOTOMY
Um. Yes. Well, I did say I had constructed it!
The ilium is a bone, part of the pelvis. (The "ischium" is another part of the pelvis. It's pronounced "ISS-key-um." It has nothing at all to do with the present discussion except that it's right next door to the ilium. Neither one has anything to do with the Topless Towers or the face that launched a thousand ships.))
An "-otomy" is a hole in something. Like a craniotomy, made in the head to relieve excess pressure from the brain.
So an "iliotomy" would be a hole in the pelvic bone, which is exactly what sometimes was is made with a big sharp needle for the purpose of extracting a sample of bone marrow from the iliac crest, for diagnostic study.
Confusion can sometimes arise because there is also the ileum, which is the second portion of the small intestine, the first being the duodenum. This gives rise to "ileotomy" and "ileostomy," which are real words. (An "-ostomy" is a permanent opening in something, from "stoma," which means "mouth.")
Thus giving us to two possible continuations from here:
ILEOTOMY and then ILEOSTOMY
(I knew anatomy class would be useful for something eventually...)

Rhub and Tromb seem to have disappeared It's theater season here, and I'm now in rehearsal for production number three, not to mention practicing and rehearsing for 1812 Overture and New World Symphony in August, and babysitting grandson no. 1. And graphics galore. I'm looking in from time to time, but mutely.

Thank you for the explanation, wofa - I freely admit that I was thinking of the ilEum, which I knew to be part of the small intestine ( although I couldn't remeber which bit!) I had never come across the ilIum - level 8 biology wasn't very thorough!
