Random points.
It can work both ways. In some cases, failure to speak a certain way - can act as a shibboleth.
There are certain kinds of words that can seem innocuous to outsiders, but act like a Pavlov's bell to the well-indoctrinated crowd.
A few key words evoke an entire emotional saga for the intended audience.

One of my petitions was denied by Juvenile Court: I had written it stating that the three-year-old wandered the neighborhood so much that all the neighbors knew who she was and frequently had to take her back home. I was informed that I would have to add a sentence stating that this put the child in danger. Wish I'd known this word then.
Speaking of words--this weekend I saw something I never dreamed I'd see: a menu that actually has the word gallimaufry on it!!! It was the title on one of the tabs.

It's worth a lot, thank you. It could also mean It's worth a louse, thank you. Shibboleth = jargon for people who favor the long and impressive over short and simple?

I have almost the same story, but to do with reporting neighbours for animal cruelty. They had a (too young) dog who was new mum, with three puppies, never off the chain, no water, and feed scraps every other day or so...full of fleas and hacking cough. The 'authorities' asked me questions like...did the dog have shelter?, yes it did, did I see it get feed?...well yes, because I would throw food over the fence to her, and did it have water?, not all the time, and had I spoken to the neighbour about it?...well NO, I was too scared to. Well they called back after a week's ? investigation and said, as the dog had shelter, food and water...they had too many other serious cases to deal with and they were not going to take it any further.... Sometimes words fail me!
