Last night a contestant on a television show said he had "kind of a man-crush" on the host, who was also male.

Is this meant romantically, or what? I'd not heard the expression before.

It's to do with admiration and respect. I wouldn't use the term myself. There are a spate of terms floating around at the moment using the 'man' prefix. Man cave, Man shower, Man up, Man boobs...ya get the drift?

ok..but what about man time!

KFC in australia is pushing 'a bunless burger' with double chicken, double bacon and double cheese.....and men 'the man sized heart attack' is encouraging you to spend time with your man friends.....

man time double

There are a spate of terms floating around at the moment using the 'man' prefix. Man cave, Man shower, Man up, Man boobs...ya get the drift? Yeh. Without the "man" it would have just been 'I have a crush on this man', which seems Not Quite Ready for Prime Time. This was a cooking contest for some serious money, not a celebrity talk show, etc. where that kind of talk might be expected. IMHO.

But--wouldn't be the first thing I'm behind the times on!

Jackie...its ok in polite circles to say it...the 'man crush'

its an asexual term...stating admiration, not 'interest'!

I disagree that it is asexual. I have only heard it used as in "if I were into men, he would be my type". I see it as one (welcome) step towards a broader acceptance of other sexualities.

Kinda yes and no. How's that for a definite answer, eh. HA!

What it means is the first guy is a little enamored with the second guy; he admires him and would like to hang out with him. It doesn't mean he wants to date him.

My current man-crush is on Adam Baldwin (plays John Casey on NBC's Chuck). Definitely not a romantic kind of thing, I just like his vocabulary.

For me: Forrest Whitaker on Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior.
Mine changes regularly, of course.

Huh--maybe the term's meaning depends on the context. belM, nice to see you here; and, you've taken us right back to the gutter! grin

Another "dude" I have kind of a man crush on...singer Tom Waits. The guy writes excellent lyrics, a master wordsmith...I'll bet he visits this site. :P

There are probably many in the sports world. Lots of talk
about the new Masters champion yesterday, but I don't
follow all that too much.

It does count. But man-crush is just another fun way of saying the same thing.

I guess, me being female, would have to say...I admire

The person I most admire is Nancy Bird-Walton. I meet her a few times.

(OK..Buff, thanks for that correction)

I guess it counts, but then there are usually a whole bunch of different and not so different ways to say many things. Why? Are "Leave!", "Get out of here!", and "Scram!" literally the same in meaning, but all slightly different in tone or register? Why do people curse or use euphemism or dysphemism? Why do some rail on the conspiritoriality of perceived politically correct speech? How and why does slang arise?

Ceci n'est pas un seing.

That is much preferred, as far as I am concerned. I'd never
say "man-crush" in real live conversation.

As usual I posted without going to the next page:

How and why does slang arise?

This would be a good thread by itself.
