Can you help me to find out what a Gertrude was?

The Women's Auxiliary of an Anglican church in Ontario (where I am updating the parish history) in 1932 assembled the following items for the Residential School children:

"Contents of General Bale for Punnichy Mission Saskatchewan

Quilts 4, Towels 5, ….. blanket,7 child's dresses, 10 coats, 2 skirts/suit (woman,s) 2 dresses, 2 girls dresses, scarves, 3 suits mens underwear,2 Kimonas, Boys vest, childs hood scarf and socks, 4 womans petticoat, 4 boys suits (blouse and knickers)5 cotton frocks (w), 3 pieces of fur, 4 mens ties, thread, tape, work bag, 3 soap, 1 ointment, 1Vaseline, 1 cocoa, safety pins, Baby's frock, 3 Gertrudes, 1 Kimona, 1 Nightgown, 2 pr bootees, 2 pr socks, 1 pr bloomers, 2 scribblers, 2 games, boys sweater, childs pants 7 pr,
Running shoes, 2 mens flannel shirts, 1 pr trousers, 1 undervest, 2 hats, 1 blouse, 1 pr mitts, 1 childs waist"

The compact Oxford Dictionary does not include the word. My best guess is a piece of intimate women's clothing.

This is the first time I have ever participated in an on-line forum. Apologies for any errors in protocol.

welcome, vek!

here's what I found:

Quote:
A "Gertrude" is a style of slip or petticoat that buttons at both shoulders.

My mother's given name was Gertrude, and used a nickname, hiding
her 'real' name until her death. When the obituary appeared
the nickname had to be included as no one knew she was a
Gertrude. Her dissatisfaction with the name came when an
older brother discovered this definition as Buf gives.
