I hate to do this, but I'm going to link to Wikipedia. When I saw this term in a link from tsuwm, I had to check out what it meant. There is a great moving picture here

Wow! That beautiful moving drawing is an invention of John Harrison, the famous British 18th century clockmaker. He dedicated his whole life to produce a clock that would serve for sailors to give them the exact (and life saving) longitude at sea. In 2000 BBC made a captivating TV drama series ( see link below ) after the book: The Longitude, by Dava Sobel. Fascinating series with Michael Gambon as John Harrison. I've taken it all on tape and still put it on sometimes, because it is so fascinating. Try see it if you can. I did read the book too. Quite a story!. (thanks grasshopper escapement!) Harrison book

Only last week did I visit my favorite clockmaker to obtain some oil for my grandfather clock. We had a marvelous visit. His is a dying art, with all the digital in use. He told me about a beautiful pocket watch dated 1896, brought into his store. He had to send it out as he no longer carries the workings. Sad, in a way. I obtained my oil and spent some time over the weekend giving my clock a Thanksgiving dinner.

Thanks, Branny. Golly, the world is so full of a number of (great) things, isn't it?! If I can, I'm going to check that book out of the library and take a look; it looks like a good book club recommendation.
Speaking of great things--I am listening to the Messiah, in preparation for the singalong tomorrow night. Anna, are you going to one this year?

Ohh, bad manners, replying to my own post! But the singalong was glorious! This was the best soprano soloist we've ever had: her voice was like liquid. She is the only person I have ever heard do a true trill with her voice.
