Wow, this one had several meanings I was unaware of. I ran the word through Google Images--well worth doing, as many of the pictures are better, but too big to put here.

"2. A fishing net having three layers."

"3. An instrument for drawing ellipses."

This was the only other one I could be sure of:

Also: "From Old French tramail, from Latin tremaculum, from tres (three) + macula (mesh)."
I've heard of macular degeneration; do we have mesh in our eyes?

And, in "[the ban on cigarette sales at Boston drugstores and on college campuses] does trammel on businesses' right to sell...", is the word on extraneous?

The first time I came across the word was when I was taught how to draw an elipse using the Trammel method, freehand.

Latin macula means 'spot, stain; mark, blemish'. It has a secondary meaning of mesh, from holes in the whole. Macular degeneration refers to the anatomy term macula lutea, literally 'yellow spot' near the center of the retina.

Ceci n'est pas un seing.

Yes, my father had that, totally correct as I understood it at the time.

Luke, not to be a worrier but it runs in families (My Mom and all her siblings have it.) Talk to your eye doc and WEAR SUNGLASSES as UV can make it worse.
