Quote:
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, like other college dictionaries, actually promotes the misuse of the English language. Dictionaries are ever more a catalog of confusions, a list of illiteracies. Dictionaries acknowledge the errors that people make; by acknowledging them they, in effect, endorse them; by endorsing them, they are thought correct by the dull, duped public. Ultimately, all words will mean whatever we think they mean, indeed, whatever we want them to mean.

It's amazing the amount of literature that was written during the Tudor, Elizabethan, and Jacobean periods in England, before the advent of a standardized orthography. Didn't seem to stop Shagsbeard from penning masterpieces when he never even signed his name twice the same way. I'd say the genius of English literature just barely survived having been written in the past couple of hundred years using one of the worst, un-thought-out spelling systems extant. Every time a grammatohooligan does a spit-take while reading a greengrocer's apostrophized signage, a puppy or kitten is killed at the pound.

Anna thank you for "outpoint" a most excellent Type-2 term which I shall endeavor to ensconce

zm: I only wish I were as articulate as you and Anna. To write sentences like that I'd have to spend half the morning at Thesaurus.com

...where I really did go to find "articulate," a Type-2 which I allow you might consider Type-1

Is TVR one of those things where any old body can go on there and put whatever they want? That quote sounds like it's somebody who might be sitting back and thinking, "Well--let's see how much discord I can stir up with this." [hatred e]

nope. TVR is an e-journal that solicits and publishes articles and columns — Robert Hartwell Fiske is the editor and publisher of Vocabula.

edit: note that they do have a Forum tho'.

Did have a Forum. They got tired of some Fool suggesting that they didn't know what they were talking about.

"TVR Forums are temporarily offline. We apologize for the inconvenience."

huh. this explains the offlineness, I guess. but, temporarily?
maybe they're hoping to Fool the problem.

edit: as of now, they've removed most of the links.
