English pencil is from Vulgar Latin pēnicellus from Latin pēnicillus double diminutive of pēnis 'tail; brush'. It seems the Romans had things bass awkward.

The Romans used a stylus (also stilus) for writing on wax tablets. Stylologist has a nice ring, but it would probably have to include penophiles.

I am a pencil collector who would like to correspond with pencil collectors. My favorite pencil would be the Ticonderoga and all the variations.

the Ticonderoga is a very good pencil for a consumer model, though I've had problems with loose erasers. (heh) I prefer the Dixon Oriole.

I did have a student leave behind a couple of Mirado Black Warriors, and damn, that's a nice pencil.

Do you also write or draw with those pencils? Or is it just keeping them in boxes?

Nobody seems to have addressed the wooden aspect of the word quest. Would "dendropenicologist" sound like someone who collects sex toys? (Not to be confused with piciformes )

Would "dendropenicologist" sound like someone who collects sex toys? Dunno, Penny; but that's not as bad as eta and zmjezhd saying the collectors ought to be called penisologists!

P.S.--I wonder if morrisol will ever come back to see if his question has been answered. Welcome if you do, sir. (No, I don't know the gender for sure; just sounds male to me.)

Nice to see you back again, Penny!

Morrisol is defenitely female, and she will never set one foot on this thread again. I'm only dreaming about all those high qualilty pencils and how many drawings one could make with them.

I was in a youth hostel in France and the clerk was thrilled when I gave him my Czech made drawing pencil for his collection. Apparently it was a make completely unknown to him.

I can't laugh, I have dozens of cookie cutters.

Morrisol just makes me think of Marisol, a Spanish girl's name.
I like that name , but of course I can't be sure.

No, but from some of us (no, not you) (sooner me) making pencil collecting look slightly ridiculous. I hope he/she understands it's harmless. I love pencils, good new ones, but mostly the ones just used down to the ideal lenght.
They will never get there when they are not used.Hope you underderstand.
