Do you-all agree? "Wit is educated insolence." --------------------------------- Sometimes. Reminds me of the old Navy charge of "insolent obedience" where a sailor carried out orders *exactly* as given. Course that was in the bad old days when flogging was common for minor infractions and the insolent obedience was one way a common (sometimes impressed or shanghied) seaman could assert some humanity.

A friend of mine spent some time in charge of the motor pool at an army post in Germany. The general procedure at the time was to bring a vehicle in when it became unusable and put it back on the road when it was working. The book said they should bring a vehicle in when anything was wrong with it and not put it back in service until it was in perfect condition. They got a new commanding officer who had spent his entire military career in the Pentagon. He decided that they would run things by the book. My friend obeyed and had the whole base shut down in a week by having no legally running vehicles.

NYC cops have work 'slow-downs' (vs strikes) by "working to rules' every little rule is obeyed.. ever thing is written up in triplicate, every i is dotted, every t is crossed..
the court system grinds to a halt. nothing get accomplished.. and the point is made.
(the other alternate to a strike is 'blue flu')

If wit is educated insolence, would persiflage be a form of educated arrogance
At risk of injecting a political note, my good buddy Mike describes Obama as arrogant; and you know, reflecting on this I think he might be right. The question is, is arrogance all that bad in a Chief Executive competent in other respects
