I am looking for a readable history for my college age daughter. Any suggestions? Thanks, in advance...

This is broader in scope than what you're looking for, but David Crystal's Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language is not only authoritative but highly entertaining and beautifully illustrated. It's got a good section on history plus other sections she can read if her interest grows. I refer to it often.
I'm sure you'll get many more suggestions, so your problem will be choosing!

Should you happen to see this today, looks like the chat will be interesting for your daughter: http://wordsmith.org/chat/history.html
