http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bardcoreOf course UD will accept anything from anybody, though you often have to give them credit for being first to lodge a neologism My question is this: If you were compiling a dictionary, what criterion would you use in deciding whether a term is widespread enough to list. For instance, would you agree w UD's 2d def You can't list them all because your dictionary would constitute 38 volumes. While ~ gets 28,000 Ghits, I had never even heard it. Had you

daleh, the criteria I first used for the online wwftd dictionary was verifying a word in two qualified sources; and by qualified I mean something found on my bricks and boards reference bookshelf, or the online equivalent thereof (e.g., OneLook, World Wide Words, Merriam-Webster Unabr. online, OED2 online, etc.).
I have expanded this criteria only slightly to include words found in online usage via Google News or Google Books.
Exceptions to the above are per Editor's Whim.

Tsu thank you for that excellent rundown. If it's no trouble could you provide a link to WWW
But concerning OED online, I'm led to believe their selection is very limited. Nonetheless thank you again and your reply is exactly the kind of thing I was soliciting. First thing this a.m. I intend to generate a Google dropdown using these sources so I can hit them with a single click
Incidentally might you know how to specify more than one url in Advance Search's Page-Specific Link so as to avoid the need for repeated searches

Daleh, the link to wwftd is on tsuwm's profile page: http://home.comcast.net/~wwftd/ note to the World At Large: wwftd moved to a new ISP today so don't forget to change your bookmark (aka favorite).

>But concerning OED online, I'm led to believe their selection is very limited. what do you mean by this?? more than the 20-volume hard copy is on line, which is to say they're in the process of updating online -- the only limitation is that it's difficult to browse. perhaps you mean that subscriptions cost; but free access is available through many libraries. have you seen our own maxq's Where can I look it up? (he lists WWW under QUINION.) edit: thanx for the note, ASp.

As long as you're at it AnnaS, you may wish to repair that link as it has an extra "http://" in it.

tsu: There is an curtailed offshoot of OED online; this is what I had reference to. Living on a fixed income I can't afford subscriptions, but if you can get me one free I'd be eternally indebted
Thank you for the "Where" link
Mus: I see only one http, but if you got two maybe Anna edited out the extra one. It used to be, incidentally, you couldn't use a link without first deleting the http, but I think they may have changed that because lately I have had much success leaving it there
Edited to remark that Anna's link didn't work for me either. Perhaps I was wrong and owing to some obscure Gates loop you still have to delete it in some applications but not others though I tried it without the http, and that didn't work either
In any case, has anyone heard of bardcore and do you agree with UD

dale, ask at your local library(s) if they have an OED subscription -- if so, they can tell you how to set up a proxy.
as to doing multiple searches in one blow, I don't think there's a way to do what you want. but you might find dogpile.com to be useful.
bardcore is a silly word that seems to be of very limited utility.
