Sorry, etaoin, I know that's true. I just think that reality is not a either/or, and that Jackie's reported bumper sticker's silly comparison diminishes the contribution that our great US Air Force makes in keeping us safe from those who wish us dead.
Good teachers are priceless.

I always wondered if the perps of that one wanted us all to abandon our home nuclear reactors and chop down the world's forests to supply our electrical needs. At one point I got two copies of that sticker and, with a little brick and mortar cut and paste, had a bumper sticker that said:

good teachers are priceless.. (oh that means they (or their services are or should be free, right?)
there are problems with schools systems, but i think most who become teachers do so because of sense of vocation..
even the best paid teachers could earn more jobs i their field, child psycologists often have no more training than teachers (both have BA/MA/internships) but they are accorded more respect and better paid. and technical teachers, (maths/sciences) are certainly working as labors of love. the question is why? why do consistanly expect teachers to sacrafice?
(mind you, my ex was a teacher, i am fully aware of the waste there is.. but there is waste in the private sector, and the US Military is certainly not an example of 'waste free industry!)
we talk about valuing education.. but as a society, we don't generally put our money where our mouth is.

Many many yeasrs ago I ran for county supervisor in a new district in Fairfax County, Virginia, on a reform platform. There had been a series of zoning scandals and campaign money was coming from some very suspect sources for the real politicians.
When the ballot came out there were four names for this particular post, determined by lot (supposedly). Mine was the bottom name, so I made my campaign slogan Vote for Ted Remington, Low Man on the Vote'm Poll. And I took a currently fad bumper sticker and rearranged it to say:
Police Your Local Support.
I was 21 at the time, and very few young voters can say they were able to vote for themselves the first time they were legally allowed to cast a ballot. And I actually got an endorsement from a pundit who wrote about local politics for the Washington Post. He said something to the effect that every board needs someone who can make puns like Ted Remington can.
