People of the earth can you hear me
Came a voice from the sky on that magical night
And in the colors of a thousand sunsets
They traveled to the world on a silvery light

The people of the earth stood waiting
Watching as the ships came one by one
Setting fire to the sky as they landed
Carrying to the world children of the sun, children of the sun

I don't hate my parents
I don't get drunk just to spite 'em
I've got my own reasons to drink now -
Think I'll call my dad up and invite 'im.
I can sleep till noon any time I want
But there's not many days that I do
I gotta get up and take on that world
When you're an adult, it's not a cliche, it's the truth

I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I got the problems of an adult
on my head and on my shoulders
I'm an adult now

I can't look at young girls anymore
People would think I'm some kind of pervert
Adults find sex either boring or dirty
Young people get away with murder
I can't write songs about girls anymore
I have to write songs about women
No more "boy meets girl, boy loses girl"
Now it's more like "man tries to figure out what the hell went wrong"

I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult on my head and my libido
I'm an adult now

I can't listen to rock and roll anymore
I mean, I like the music, but I can't stand the racket
All that screaming, screaming, screaming
Some guy screaming in a leather jacket.
I can't take drugs anymore
I can't afford any artificial joy
I'd sure look like a fool lying dead in a ditch somewhere
With my head full of chemicals like some cheese-eating high school boy

I'm an adult now
I'm an adult now
I've got the problems of an adult
on my head and on my shoulders
I'm an adult now

Why must every generation think their folks are square
And no matter where their heads are they know mom’s aunt there?
Cause I swore when I was small that I’d remember when
I knew what’s wrong with them that I was smaller then

Determined to remember all the cardinal rules
Like sun showers are legal grounds for cutting school I know I have forgotten maybe one or two
And I hope that I recall them all before the baby’s due
And I know he’ll have a question or two

Like "hey Pop, can I go ride my zoom
It goes two hundred miles an hour suspended by balloons
And can I put a droplet of this new stuff on my tongue
And imagine frothing dragons while you sit and wreck your lungs"
And I must be permissive, understanding of the younger generation

Then I’ll know that all I’ve learned my kid assumes
And all my deepest worries must be his cartoons
And still I’ll try to them him all the things I’ve done
Related to what he can do when he becomes a man
And still he’ll stick his fingers in the fan

And "Hey, Pop, my girlfriend’s only three
She’s got her own videophone and she’s taking L.S.D.
And now that we’re best friends she wants to give a bit to me
But what’s the matter Daddy, how come you’re turning green?
Can it be that you can’t live up to your dream?"

Ninety-nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic bells, it's red alert
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
As ninety-nine red balloons go by

from German band's (Nena?) lovely catchy song from about 1985 or so: 99 Red Balloons [99 Luftballons in the original]

Ninety-nine dead baboons
Sitting in my living room
Not so comfortable, it seems,
But quite a conversation piece
That one's Jake, this one's Dinah,
There's big Ned in my recliner -
No, it's not a Lazyboy,
Can't you see it's a dead baboon.

Sorry, I couldn't resist - a parody I heard about twenty years ago.
We now return to regular programming.....

I’ve been working on the railroad,
all the live-long day.
I’ve been working on the railroad,
to pass the time away.

Can’t you hear the whistle blowing,
Wake up so early in the morn.
Can you here the whistle blowing,
Dinah, blow your horn.

Dinah, won’t you blow
Dinah, won’t you blow
Dinah, won’t you blow, your horn, your horn.

Dinah, won’t you blow
Dinah, won’t you blow
Dinah, won’t you blow your horn.

There’s someone in the kitchen with Dinah,
There’s someone in the kitchen I know, I know.
There’s someone in the kitchen with Dinah,
…and he’s strumming on the ole banjo.

Strumming, strumming.
He’s strumming on the o-ole banjo, banjo.
Stumming, strumming.
He’s strumming on the o-ole banjo.

- Song I learned in grammar school when I was about 7 years old. (this was *many* moons ago so forgive any mis-remembered lyrics. )

Island Of Souls

Billy was born within sight of the shipyard
First son of a riveter's son
And Billy was raised as the ship grew a shadow
Her great hull would blot out the light of the sun

And six days a week he would watch his poor father
A working man live like a slave
He'd drink every night and he'd dream of a future,
Of money he never would save
And Billy would cry when he thought of the future

Soon came a day when the bottle was broken
They launched the great ship out to sea
He felt he'd been left on a desolate shore
To a future he desperately wanted to flee
What else was there for a shipbuilder's son
A new ship to be built, new work to be done

One day he dreamed of the ship in the world
It would carry his father and he
To a place they would never be found
To a place far away from this town.

Trapped in the cage of the skeleton ship
All the workmen suspended like flies
Caught in the flare of acetylene light
A working man works till the industry dies
And Billy would cry when he thought if the future

Then what they call an industrial accident
Crushed those it couldn't forgive
They brought Billy's father back home in an ambulance
A brass watch, a cheque, maybe three weeks to live,
And what else was there for a riveter's son
A new ship to be built, new work to be done

That night, he dreamed of the ship in the world
It would carry his father and he
To a place they could never be found
To a place far away from this town,
A Newcastle ship without coals
They would sail to the island of souls.

Coming home after school
Flying my bike past the gates
Of the factories
My mom doing the laundry
Hanging our shirts
In the dirty breeze

And after it rains
There’s a rainbow
And all of the colors are black
It’s not that the colors aren’t there
It’s just imagination they lack
Everything’s the same
Back in my little town

Nothing but the dead and dying
Back in my little town...

Willy Wonka:
[Spoken]
Hold your breath
Make a wish
Count to three

[Sung]
Come with me
And you'll be
In a world of
Pure imagination
Take a look
And you'll see
Into your imagination

We'll begin
With a spin
Traveling in
The world of my creation
What we'll see
Will defy
Explanation

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanta change the world?
There's nothing
To it

There is no
Life I know
To compare with
Pure imagination
Living there
You'll be free
If you truly wish to be

Each day through my window I watch her as she passes by.
I say to myself, "You're such a lucky guy."
To have a girl like her
is truly a dream come true.
Out of all of the fellas in the world
she belongs to you...

But it was just my imagination
running away with me.
It was just my imagination
running away with me...
