and isn't "mortice" really "mortise"? Or was that merely corroborative detail, intended to give artistic verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative?

mortice is the rightpond spelling. Don't take offence.

I'll Q up with the others...isn't the "mortise/mortice" question another left-pond vs right-pond spelling thing?

Edit: Oops, TEd - is this what they call "mantling"?

I liked "C", but thought the wording is suspect. Then I got bogged down with bog and the Scots bent, then I saw Jackie a tsuwm whacking the "C" out of orbit, so I'll take my first hunch and C .

Upon reading the definitions, my memory was jogged into recognizing the correct one. I therefore disqualify myself from voting.
