Hello old friends,
Is there a -nym word to describe a name change? Let me try to explain. I grew up in Pearl River, NY. The name of our hamlet before the Erie Lackawanna RR came through was, Muddy Creek. This was not what they wanted their conductors to sing as they pulled out of Hoboken station, so they made up a tale. It said that a valuable fresh water pearl was found in the creek, and so the name was changed. Most never believed it, but the new name was made official. Is there a word for this kind of name revision?
Respects,
OB

Thanks Fr. and thanks tsuwm.
Neomyn sounds nice, but neoteknonym has a certain gracelessness about it, but seems the most accurate to me.
I may just skip defining it and tell the story.

It could also be a exonym, he added, after everyone had left the party.

What's wrong with Muddy Creek? For a while at least Muddy Estuary had the tallest building in the world, and quite a few Hollywood films seem to have scenes shot there.

Muddy Estuary is what Kuala Lumpur means

A nym question that has been bugging me for a while is a term for the practice of following an acronym with the word the last letter stands for. As in: ATM machine, PIN number, etc. Someone I know suggested superflonym, but although I like it, I don't think it can be right. Anyone have any thoughts? I looked on the previously posted list of nym words and it's not covered (though I do like poecilonym: synonym has a synonym!).

i am quite sure there is a word for this. it is in the tip of my tongue, but cant place it

well, it is regarding inanimate objects having feelings. for example, when you throw the car key as soon as you enter home, the next day, when you search for it, you cannot find it. or the T.V. shuts down at the exact moment of your fav show, wanting to take revenge for the way you handled the remote some time back.

something of this sort. do help me find the word.

Hmm, I can only think of 'personification' or 'prosopopeia' in that category. If it's an idea then it's 'incarnation'. I don't really see how '-nym' (name) fits in there.

[Prosopopeia: A figure of speech in which inanimate objects or abstractions are endowed with human qualities or are represented as possessing human form - AHD]

Welcome, dantesian and tara.

dantesian, I like superflonym! I'm not sure there is a word for this: your suggestion is good.

tara, I think what you're looking for is "resistentialism." Yes?

Oh yeah. That's much more specific, innit. That was an AWAD pick too, BTW.

> superflonym

I like it too. But perhaps it shouldn't be a '-onym' but rather something like 'a RAEW word' (a 'Repeat Acronym End Word' word) ;-)

It is a little-known fact that AnnaStrophic's avatar is not a picture of her, at all, but rather of her familiar.

And yours, of course, is Cotton Mather's evil twin.

Cotton Mather had nine brothers and sisters, none of them his twin: Sarah Mather, Samuel Mather, Nathaniel Mather, Katherine Mather, Hannah Mather, Jerusha Mather, Mariah Mather, Elizabeth Mather, and Abigail Mather ... in that order.
