You have to admire the marketing genius of Guess choosing Paris Hilton as their "demi-pornographic"*Guess Girl.

"Demi-pornographic" gives "pornography" a whole new spin.

"Semi-pornographic" is more "ho" than "haute", if you know what I mean?

Anyone else know any other upmarket uses of the prefix "demi" ... defined thus [not as in "Demi Moore"]:

"To some degree; part; partly: demigod." [A-H]

* Read all about it on "Confessions of an Heirhead", or go to:
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/25/business/25guess.html?adxnnl=1&8hpib=&adxnnlx=1096120942-jyNCxoX1Kcz98cw2If5tuw

How about "demi-tasse", Grapho?

If you tried to sell a "semi-tasse" at Starbucks, you could only get 1/2 price.

"demi-pornographic" raises the price tag without raising the skirt [or at least removing it altogether]. You can sell haute couture in flimsey [or even in "floosie"] but not in nothing at all.

There is something very perverse about this perversion of perversity, it seems to me.

Please try to avoid social commentary, Plutarch. I promised "themgmt" I would ease up on the Carpal Tunnels.

Stick with the ancient greeks, why dontcha?

Which particular "perversity" of the Carpal Tunnels did you have in mind, Grapho?

Don't get me started, Plutarch. If a Carpal Tunnel shows up around here, you're going to have to deal with it.

I'm just looking for upmarket uses for the prefix "demi".

"demi-tasse" was a demi-good start. So demi-up or demi-off. OK?

You're dreamin' in demi-color, Grapho. No self-respecting Carpal Tunnel would stick their demi-tasse into your thread.

Look, Plutarch, this is my thread. And I'm trying to demi-tize my image around here. So, please show some demi-class and stop demi-fying my charade. OK?

OK, that's it! Stop your demi-bitching or you can both get your demi-tasses out of here.

That's no fair, themgmt. Grapho was just trying to clean up his act. Everyone deserves a second chance! Even Grapho.

Maybe so. But that's no reason to blame Plutarch, Tang.

"Down with all the Carpal Tunnels"???

I was just looking for some upmarket uses for "demi".

Whatever happened to "the mgment"?

How about "demi-gogue"?

Thanks, Wordminstrel. You really got me off the hook. I was getting some really snooty emails.

Anyone can plainly see Grapho is trying to turn over a new leaf.

Hey, who's your wingman, Grapho?

When the chips are down, you can always count on Plutarch, Grapho. You know that.

Any Carpal Tunnel that messes with you, messes with Plutarch. Hit the showers, Wordminstrel. I've got this covered.

Thanks, guys. But I don't think it will come to that. If anyone has any problem with this thread, they can come right out and say so. And then we'll deal with it honorably, like gentlemen, out in the open.

"Demimounds" or "demimons", TEdRem?

I do agree.

It's like seeing the molehills without the moles.

How about "demi-retired"?

Nowadays being "semi-retired" means you got "downsized" and you're looking for full-time work.

"Demi-retired" means you are working part-time as a matter of choice, and you're having the time of your life.

How about?

demi-dotage

As in: Demi-retirement usually leads to demi-dotage.

After that, there's not much point in putting a gloss on it. Demi-comatose, demi-dead. You see what I mean.
