Yacking with a fellow punster, I used the phrase "laughed like a drain". This was not known t'other side of the pond. Is is common where you are?

In a private post, some one asked me about my using the term "country matters" when I was, as Jackie would say, in the gutter.
I have never heard of laughed like a drain, (like a hyena maybe) and I am wondering if the country matters reference was one everyone understood.
I see it as positive re-frame– the same sort of behavior could put one in the gutter or in the country, and as for me, I'd rather be in the country!
It's Shakespearian– or at least as old as himself..

I've heard "laughed like a drain" here in Zild although it's certainly not common usage. I've always fondly imagined that it was a kind of gurgling laugh, a cross between a full-bellied laugh and a giggle. Maybe a drainiggle?
My limerick contribution, although logically, I think it came from a cork ...
There was a young senhor from Spain
Whose very heart was removed and displain
When he asked if it hurt
As the blood pooled and spurt
He just sat up and laughed like a drain.

And yes, addiction just crept up on me unawares - Jackie had to it point out to me  In the circumstances, Rhu, can I be excused the essay please? Puns and word jokes, however insane, Make a maverick laugh like a drain! The only real pain Is when forced to explain He’s an Addict – so kindly refrain!
