Sol makes more sense to me as a day than a year. Two "suns" or "sols" is a basic concept that someone from another language would find easy to translate even if I didn't know the correct word for day. A year however would be 2 "winters" or some such thing. (and no I don't mean that it would be easier for Martians to understand - They already know how to speak English from monitoring all that television.)
Although if they want to be consistant it should 7 ares make 1 aeroweek. That way they could use the same system on other planets: 7 sats make 1 satweek, 7 plutes make 1 plutoweek (and 7 uros make 3 Canadian dollars.)

>"Prentious? Moi?" Unless of course there was a letter missing..

actually®, there're two letters missing in prentious, which I wouldn't presume to point out in ordinary circumstances, but after 3 uses in one thread I just couldn't take it any more.
-joe (pretentious, moi?!) friday

Wow! I saw the first one, and thought of correcting it, but I did not even realise that I had left out the te in two other instances. Sorry about that, everyone.

One of the major reasons for scheduling work during the Martian daylight hours is because them Mars dune doggies is solar-powered. If they run them at night they will use battery power which will not be replenished until the sun do come up again, one night and 39 minutes later. Much better to save the batteries for night-time emergencies like going out for

KSR came up with a good scheme for those 39 minutes. In his novels the clocks just stopped for 39 minutes then took off again!

I'm not even going to ask how we got from sols to porn stars.

However, et', I did want to let you know that the reporters on some space news program I watched this evening said sols often, as though everyone would be familiar with the term. I felt like such a smartypants sitting there in the tv audience, thanks to you!
