Okay--I now realize I need an explanation. I thought the opening post was an invitation to make stuff up. These are things actually sent via e-mail? Why, please, and what do spam filters have to do with it?

Jackie, the latest SPAM rage uses random subject lines, in an effort to sneak past your spam filters. Fald found them poetic, or at least one of them. my email provider stops most of my spam at the server, so it never gets to my inbox, but I can check it online to see if I'm not missing any legitimate mail. some of the names of the "people" sending this spam are pretty interesting, too. I did have to check one that was from "Shona." sadly, it was not to be...

some of the names of the "people"

If you haven't been fortunate enough to get some of these, they have names like 'Dispute K. Invalidate.'

So, spam filters are designed to reject certain words, say maybe, 'buy', and 'offer'?

That and whole phrases or a certain style. That's why Spams have been getting more poetical. They're trying to make them less like other spams.

...to slip past the filters you get words like pen|s...

Here's a humorous sample from todays batch:

The subject line was "breeze scathe homophobia biblical baronial"

The links were embedded in this text...
"The heealthy way to lonse foat and keep it okff."
"Best vadlue weikght lopss progxram on the intgernet!"

And if that wasn't wacky enough, it came with the following long list of words in the body which, I would think when included, would be more apt to have it filtered...

cathodic prerogative bonaventure concomitant knoweth rock prosthetic allow offhand bunt rune foliate pittston psychiatrist groom recombinant apocrypha aspirate leaven id secrete confidential bangui agatha hammerhead hanford continued assist propeller reactant gould omission pelvic delicatessen ragweed option expenditure exposure ashy rook however illicit chandelier hew ambiance curvilinear filmmake chattanooga earn goblet nsf butyl haynes ascetic aim sector clump hudson pork shuck glisten rogue buyer decorate ecology noel broadloom blackboard robertson innate helmsman roundup immune sidemen prone furry peccary circulant eastland macmillan scour initial formulaic calligraphy attainder butterfield remiss birth ehrlich prefix furrier cudgel frisky razor closeup inquisitor regressive burton czechoslovakia crusoe caliber bamboo equipoise bertram delicatessen compassion embarrass chesapeake heart halma munson blotch kent nomad horsemen loam polarography erotica algol lithograph bad malfunction dread cohesion bayda concave impish berkelium moneywort backorder forgotten coolidge cutworm leone blanchard parenthetic click meritorious horehound bernardo infelicitous countryman meaty grandstand ezekiel rakish middleweight arab pail nitrogen destinate admiral insensitive alameda minos elephantine inhibit consignor bombay fingerprint haberman admiral idolatry offensive algal ghoulish optic exogamous canadian sift hyde amateur aqueduct dogwood embedder baptistery carboxylic doolittle advantage bogy hiatt radial hobby corvette bigot heft addis economic mathematic immodesty hear alec delphi disgustful goucher fiancee harshen maniac conscript sanatoria adobe polyhymnia forgotten deviate

This one wasn't poetic, but it took a huge weight off my shoulders. It assured me that I "no longer had to cross the border" to get cheap prescription drugs. Since it's been a while since I was up to swimming 2,000 kilometres, I was enormously relievd to hear this.

Re: hyena lacuna checklist marvel. "Could someone provide the story please?"

I know it sounds like a lipstick, but it actually makes some kind of sense.

Anatomically, a "lacuna" is "an empty space or a missing part".

Metaphorically, "lacuna" is missing grey matter, or simply "ignorance".

"Hyena" rhymes with "lacuna" but it also conjures up "laughing hyena".

Hyenas don't actually laugh. They are too empty-handed to laugh. And some people lacking in grey matter have more in common with hyenas than their laugh.

Hence, "hyena lacuna".

It is not a compliment.

The term "hyena lacuna" may spring to mind the next time someone sends you a reply beginning "LOL", particularly if you haven't said anything funny.

"checklist marvel" is just some archive somewhere, I suspect.

I found the lovely AnnaS's discovery to be particularly interesting since, Flagstaff, located in the American southwest, might be expected to have many examples of the adobe architecture so often accompanied by those quaint red-tiled roofs. On the contrary, whether due to the climate or the history, there was little, if any Hispano-American influence and there are few, if any, buildings of that nature.

And if you meant empty headed, I'm sure a lot of laughter
must come from those with large lacunae.

Imprisonments H. Naiades

What I find particularly interesting about this one is the last name. AHD gives both naiads and naiades as plurals of naiad. The former would be the more common English plural but the latter is the correct Latin plural (nom. and acc., anyway).

Like many of you, we receive hundreds of spam (unsolicited) e-mails each week. It seems the people behind them are now well aware that one method of filtering these e-mails is to block anything with certain words (free, viagra, weight-loss and so on) in the subject line. Instead the senders are now generating e-mails with apparently random words, sometimes with quite poetic results. A couple we've had recently are "grammar congresswoman" and "carrot necromancer".

Do you suppose the Cashew Orthography Capacitor is cousin to our Enigma?
