Sherlock Holmes speaks of a "crony" of the landlady. I wondered about the etymology. From AHD: crony SYLLABICATION: cro·ny PRONUNCIATION: krn NOUN: Inflected forms: pl. cro·nies A longtime close friend or companion. ETYMOLOGY: Possibly from Greek khronios, long lasting, from khronos, time.

Oh, I do love learning here, wwh, that crony came from khronos for time. To think of those friends with whom we've shared long, long streches of time is simply rich.
I wish we called them khronies instead--I can just about hear that great movement of time in one of the movements from Holst's "The Planets."
