Dear Bingley: Thanks for that link. I get the impresssion though that smoke is coming out into the room, which would be no improvement on Franklin's stove. When Jane Austen mentioned marble, I anticipated a German Kachelofen, which may have been a bit later, but apparently a real source of comfort.

I think it's supposed to be part of Rumford's shadow rather than smoke from the fire. If you mouse over the bottom right hand corner of the picture at just the right spot you should see a button you can click on to see an enlarged view of the picture.

Dear Bingley: I had not noticed the shadow was that of the man standing before the Rumford. It does look rather small.
I wonder if it was intended for coal rather than wood.
I also think a Franklin stove would be more efficient, though taking up more room space.
Here is a URL with picture of Franklin stove, but regrettable does not show smoke pipe arrangement. Maybe like the Rumford it was originally incorparated into fireplace:
