In another post about special bird fat storage, I was reminded of Indian "pemmican" made from dried meat and berries, used on long trips. Searching for "pemmican" brought me to a site about Indian nutrition. I was also reminded of Governor Bradford (my ancestor) learning from Indians to sow corn when the leaves on the white oaks were the size of a mouse's ear. Those Indians were smarter by far than a lot of palefaces who still think the phase of the moon is to be considered. http://collections.ic.gc.ca/saskindian/a75aug3016.htm

Pemmican always reminds me of Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons children's books. Wonderful books, but although I enjoyed them as a boy, I do wonder whether they, like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, really have more appeal for adults.

Oh yes. I remember reading them as a 10 year old and loving them. I saw them in the kids (sorry young adults) section of one of the bookshops here much to my astonishment.
