If I attended a college and would have graduated in 1990, but transferred out in the spring of 1987, what is the proper designation for me in the "class notes" section of the alumni magazine, ex '87 or ex 90? (Or something else?)

I was Class of '65 at the college I dropped, flunked, and got kicked out of in 1963. In their alumni begging letters they put me in Class of '65.

Well, Alex, it couldn't be for a time that you weren't there, so I guess it'd have to be '87.

well, Jackie's post nudged me to read Alex's a little more closely, and so I disagree: I think it would be x'90. which agrees with Fald's take.
