Bribe him with a rasher of bacon.

Not that he could be bribed. However, I do like the word rasher and like to drop it whenever it fits in with the conversation.

I feel strongly ambivalent about the word rasher. I love the sound of it but felt betrayed when I discovered that it refers to but one slice. I had previously imagined that someone eating a whole rasher of bacon was feasting.

And a thin slice at that, according to Will Shortz.

So, Connie. What are you on about?

Or, no, wait! You gotta come up with a word first.

I had just then figured it out. Y'all's palm-of-hand-slapping was but an echo of mine own.

Yep, I also only got it after Faldage's post.

Pretty subtle for a hog-callin' contest, if you ask me. Now *that was a good pun, Connie!

Jack Ketch features prominently, if transiently, in Neal Stephenson's new novel Quicksilver (published 9/23). It's set in Seventeenth Century Europe (and other places) and full of authentic, if obscure and dated, words...

I've never seen this before: Author releases new work, the first book of what is supposed to become a trilogy eventually. Dust jacket features not just the names but even the jacket designs of the second and third volulmes. Is it hubris or simply good planning?

And I understood her immediately, also, if not tsuwner.

And, Faldo of the sometimes argumentative turn of mind, don't you think calling a little strip of bacon a 'rasher' automatically makes it taste better? A strip of bacon is not very exciting to anticipate--but a rasher? Ah! Now that's something to get up for!

That's the problem; it promises more than it delivers.

I saw two - "sooooey" - hog calling, and "tsuwm". At least your post drew comment. I used up my neuron coming up with my "reaping & sowing" Halloween pun, and got nada.

Mood Indigo
You ain't been blue; no, no, no.
You ain't been blue,
Till you've had that mood indigo.
That feelin' goes stealin' down to my shoes
While I sit and sigh, "Go 'long blues".

Always get that mood indigo,
Since my baby said goodbye.
In the evenin' when lights are low,
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

'Cause there's nobody who cares about me,
I'm just a soul who's bluer than blue can be.
When I get that mood indigo,
I could lay me down and die.
-Duke Ellington

Well, I saw the purple mood, but as I don't know Mood Indigo, well.. [straight over head e] Although "I'm so lonesome I could cry." rang a bell; wasn't that a song by Willie Nelson or somebody? But, here's something for when the cloud lifts. I have a special fondness for this song: I was probably about 20, when I stayed to help clean up after my aunt-and-uncle's 50th. anniversary party down in Tennessee. My cousin and her husband gave me a ride back to the house, and on the way he sang that song. I hadn't realized before what a genial (ha--his name's Gene!) man he was, and I was so pleased. But I remember being surprised that such an "old man" would know that song--he must have been 45, at the outside!

I Can See Clearly Now
Jonnhy Nash

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I’ve been prayin’ for
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

Look all around, there’s nothin’ but blue skies
Look straight ahead, nothin’ but blue skies

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
Sun-Shiny day.

[another straight over head e] I have no idea what reaping and sowing have to do with Halloween.

indigo - [blue-violet]The hue of that portion of the visible spectrum lying between blue and violet, evoked in the human observer by radiant energy with wavelengths of approximately 420 to 450 nanometers; a dark blue to grayish purple blue.[/blue-violet] [AHD4]

So am I. Seldom do I really nail a clever pun, and on those rare occasions, they almost invariably go unnoticed, as did this one.

Well, to be honest, it was little strained.

The pun would read like this:
"If you misbehave at Halloween you'll soon be reapin' what you're samhain."
