I'm looking for lists; categories, taxonomies, rankings, etc. no real explanations necessary, just lists of hierarchies such as:
beginner
intermediate
advanced
master
etc... they could be for any topic, subject, concept, blah, blah.
a web site would be terricfic. I know there was great consternation here when the various levels were decided: Stranger, Enthusiast, Pooh-Bah, etc.
I'm sorry if this is a major yart, but my copious search left me empty.

Thanks, Jackie, a couple of those have a good list.

>There's always the military hierarchy.
I'll probably stay away from that one, but where can I find it?

to clarify, what I'm looking for are progressions of names, or titles such as:
novice
apprentice
master
etc.

I saw a list about rubrics once, that had a several examples. haven't been able to find it again...

Chess Players:

From http://makeashorterlink.com/?X31121535

Class E: below 1200
Class D: 1200-1399
Class C: 1400-1599
Class B: 1600-1799
Class A: 1800-1999
Expert (Candidate Master): 2000-2199
Master: 2200-2399
Senior Master: 2400+

-----------------------------------
Go Players:

From http://www.faqs.org/faqs/games/go-faq/
"In Japanese, Kyu means 'step' and Dan means 'grade'. The idea is that
one must progress through several elementary steps before obtaining a
grade, and that there are several grades.

"Therefore, several steps and grades exist. The scale starts around 30
Kyu (lowest) to 1 Kyu (highest) and then continues with 1 Dan (lowest)
to 7 Dan (highest). In addition, there are professional Dan ranks,
which run from 1 Dan professional (lowest) to 9 Dan professional
(highest)."

-----------------------------------
From Renzo and Royler Gracie's book "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu":

The belt system is:
white, blue, purple, brown, black (with various degrees), and finally red.

-----------------------------------
You could probably also look at education:
pre-k graduates
elementary graduates
middle school graduates
high school graduates
associates degree
bachelors
masters
doctoral
post-doctoral

-----------------------------------

cub scouts -> weblos -> boy scouts

From http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Scouts_of_America

(it also doesn't mention weblos and has the order:
cub scouts -> boy scouts -> venturers)

Within boy scouts,

"The Scout rank badge has a brown fleur-de-lis on a greenish-yellow background. The fleur-de-lis symbolizes a compass needle, pointing the Scout in the right direction, which is onward and upward.
The Tenderfoot rank badge has a yellow fleur-de-lis, with a star on each of the two lateral points, an eagle on the center, and a shield on the eagle's chest colored somewhat like the American flag. The stars symbolize truth and knowledge; the eagle and shield symbolize freedom and readiness to defend that freedom.
The Second Class rank badge has a yellow horizontal scroll with the words "Be Prepared," the ends turned up, and a knotted rope hanging from the bottom. This emblem represents service. The upturned ends of the scroll symbolize cheerfulness in service.
The First Class rank badge combines the emblems for Tenderfoot and Second Class.
The Star rank badge has the First Class emblem on top of a yellow star.
The Life rank badge has the First Class emblem on top of a red heart, signifying that the ideals of Scouting have become a part of the Scout's life and character.
The Eagle Scout badge has a grey eagle, and a grey scroll like that on the Second Class emblem. They are on a tricolor background ringed with the words "Eagle Scout: Boy Scouts of America." "

--------------------------
Federal employees have WG, GS, and SES levels (with numbers denoting "grade" differentiating within a category).

I'm sure there's a site somewhere that discusses this.

So you're only interested in linear, progressive taxonomies and not general taxonomies, correct?

When it comes up, click on tab at top for military ranks in USA and UK and there's a tab for the military alphabet for any curious.

the most familiar (ha ha) linear taxonomy must be:

son, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and the female equivalent.

They do that here, but it's just called withholding.

"Withholding" encompaes all the deductions from a paycheck, including contributions to Social Security, the employees share of medical/dental insurance plans, retirement funds, possibly U.S. savings bonds and anything else you've signed up for and FICA. What's left is called "take home pay" in the USA.
I used to know what FICA. stood for but cannot recall. Tried the Dept. of Treasury website to no avail...anyone out there help me?

What do you call the levels of college students in a four-year program, then, if not freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior?

There are rookie teams, too? I'd only ever thought that rookie was a term applied to a new(ish) player.

There's even two levels of Rookie league. The Appalachian and Pioneer Leagues take mostly kids drafted out of high school and maybe lesser college players. Then there's the Gulf Coast League and the Arizona League that take the really marginal choices. They don't even encourage fan support.

There's also welterweight, middle weight and heavy weight. Not sure which order the first two go in.

Linnaeus the father of modern taxonomy classified all organisms in a hierarchy of seven levels - KINGDOM PHYLUM CLASS ORDER FAMILY GENUS SPECIES; (two were added on later; it was orginally five). He also is credited with the binomial nomenclature - identifying organisms by the genus and the species name in that order, e.g., Homo sapiens

I'll add my thanks, Bingley. It really helps remembering the names when the meaning is revealed. There surely must be something like this online, for animal names too; shall post, if I find. eta,

The WTF Taekwondo weight categories are (from lightest to heaviest):

Fin
Fly
Bantam
Feather
Light

Heavy

Maybe they are similar in boxing?
