Q & A is slow today so perhaps I may be permitted a "Jeopardy-like" question: What is "water torture"? It isn't a form of torture outlawed by the Geneva Conventions. The new understanding that the quake observatory brings to seismic science, Ellsworth said, will have tremendous practical value, too, because it will yield information crucial to improved building codes and quake-resistant structures.
